What does your business do? At GenuineClass, we
develop and implement a variety of programs, staffed by
experienced technical instructors, to teach children about
computers and programming. We offer workshops and classes to
help build children's skills in math, art, puzzle- and
problem-solving, music, computer programming, and language
arts. Our classes, technology camp summer sessions, and
computer- themed birthday parties all introduce children to
computer operations and to creative uses of technology.
When and why did you start the biz? GenuineClass
was launched in December 2001 with a mission of providing
computer resources for children and families to discover
technology through hands-on activities. Initially launched
with two New York City locations, GenuineClass aims to enhance
children's understanding and use of technology by utilizing
well-equipped labs managed by knowledgeable staffers who are
IT professionals.
How Many People are in your Company? 1 full-time,
20 part-time instructors
Where's your office? Our facilities are provided
by Netcom Information Technology, serving the metropolitan New
York City area with two locations -- one in Long Island City
in Queens, and one in the Empire State Building in Manhattan.
What's the toughest part of running your
biz? Marketing while we're still small -- we need to
build buzz to increase the number of customers, but it's a
challenge to garner good press when our accomplishments are
still works-in-progress.
What's the most fun part? Teaching the kids. All
of the hands-on activities that the instructors and I get to
do with the children -- and the results we see --really
validate what we're doing in starting the business.
Anything you would have done differently? Begun
networking sooner -- everyone you interact with has the
potential to be helpful to you in growing your business.
What's next on the horizon for you and your
biz? We're opened our doors with a full-blown
after-school program at the beginning of February 2002.
What advice do you have for others who are planning to
take the leap? Have faith in yourself!
How do you use Idea Cafe to help you with your biz
(and/or your sanity)? I use it to learn from others in
the forums.
School (where, still in school, degree)? Wesleyan
University, BA. Psychology major.
Prior jobs or business? GenuineClass was
launched by Eileen Mullin, a former Wall Street executive who
has written four books on Internet services and graphic
design. She was vice president of global HR Internet Strategy
for Merrill Lynch.
