Exercise: Create a Magnet Picture Frame

Avoid curled edges on photos tacked to the fridge with these magnet picture frames. The center of the magnet is cut out to allow the photo to show through.

The key to designing and printing your own personalized magnets is using magnet sheets that can be run through an inkjet printer. These sheets are strong enough to hold up photos on most metal surfaces, such as a refrigerator.

Magnet Frame

Materials
  • Computer with an inkjet printer
  • Inket magnet sheets (Avery 3270 is one style)
  • Pair of scissors, X-acto knife or box cutter
  • Family photographs (wallet-sized photos are the best size)
Instructions
  1. Browse the magnet templates shown below. Click on the link for your chosen template to open it, or right-click to download the file to your computer.

    • " I [heart] MOM" and " I [heart] Dad"
    • Pyschedelic frame and wooden frame design
      (more templates to follow shortly)

  2. Each magnet template is stored as a PDF file and can be opened directly with your Web browser or with the Adobe Acrobat Reader program. Load your inkjet printer with a magnetic sheet (Avery is one manufacturer) and print the template.
  3. Now cut out the circle or square area that represents where the photo will show through. This is more easily done with an X-acto knife or box cutter than with scissors. An adult should complete this step.
  4. Trim the photograph as necessary and position it so that it displays well within the cutout window. You may want to Scotch-tape the photo to the back of the magnet to hold it in place. Avoid overusing the tape, though, to ensure the magnet can readily adhere to the refrigerator.
  5. Feel free to decorate the magnet further with sparkles, stickers, sequins, or any other trimmings the kids can think of.
  6. Place the magnet on the fridge and wait for your loved one to notice!
We'd appreciate any feedback you may have!
